Blepharitis and Demodex Treatment in Kingswood, Penrith

Are your eyes constantly itchy, your lashes flaky, or your eyelids red and sore? You may be dealing with blepharitis—a common eyelid condition that often goes undiagnosed. And if you’ve been treating your dry eye symptoms with no success, Demodex mites could be part of the problem.

At Andrew Mizzi Optometrist], we take a closer look at what’s really causing your eye discomfort. With advanced diagnostics and effective treatment options, we’ll help you find relief and prevent your symptoms from returning.

What Is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a common inflammatory condition that affects the eyelid margins, where your lashes grow and your meibomian glands are located. It can affect one or both eyes and is often chronic, meaning it tends to come and go over time.

It’s caused by an overgrowth of bacteria, clogged oil glands, or a buildup of debris along the lash line. In many cases, it's linked to other conditions like rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, or dry eye disease, and yes, it can worsen symptoms like stinging, blurry vision, or light sensitivity.

Blepharitis is not contagious, but it can be persistent if left untreated. And unfortunately, daily face washing alone often isn’t enough to keep it under control.

Two Main Types of Blepharitis

1. Anterior Blepharitis: Affects the outside front edge of the eyelids, often caused by bacteria or scalp and eyebrow dandruff.

2. Posterior Blepharitis: Involves the inner edge of the eyelid (where the glands open), often caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)—a major contributor to evaporative dry eye.

Tip: If you’ve ever noticed crusty flakes around your lashes in the morning, or your eyes feel worse when you wake up, that’s a common sign of blepharitis.

What Is Demodex Blepharitis?

If your blepharitis just won’t go away, even with warm compresses, drops, or good hygiene, you might be dealing with Demodex blepharitis.

Demodex is a type of microscopic mite that naturally lives on human skin. Most of the time, they don’t cause problems. However, when they overpopulate, especially in the eyelash follicles, they can cause a specific type of blepharitis that leads to persistent symptoms and inflammation of the lash line.

How Demodex Affects Your Eyes:

  • They live inside eyelash follicles and meibomian glands
  • Their presence causes inflammation, redness, and itching
  • They leave behind waste and debris that irritates the skin and eyes
  • They can contribute to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), leading to evaporative dry eye

Common Signs of Demodex Blepharitis:

  • Itchy eyelids, especially in the morning
  • Flaky debris or “collarettes” at the base of lashes (they look like little cuffs)
  • Red, swollen, or irritated eyelids
  • Loss of eyelashes or lashes growing in the wrong direction
  • Dry, gritty, or burning eyes that don’t respond to usual treatments

Why Eyelid Hygiene Matters

Daily eyelid hygiene is the key to managing blepharitis, and it's especially important when Demodex mites are present.

Even with the cleanest skincare routine, bacteria, oil, and mite debris can build up along your lash line. If not addressed, this disrupts your tear film, inflames the eyelid margins, and leads to chronic dry eye symptoms.

Our optometrist takes a comprehensive, personalised approach to treatment. We’ll identify the root cause and create a plan that may include:

  • Eyelid cleaning with wipes or foams
  • Heat masks or compresses to support oil gland function
  • Lubricating or anti-inflammatory eye drops
  • Nutritional support (like omega-3s)
  • Recommendations for makeup, skincare, and environmental triggers

Blephadex™ Eyelid Wipes

For many of our Kingswood, Penrith patients with Demodex or chronic blepharitis, we recommend Blephadex™ wipes. These pre-moistened wipes contain:

  • Tea tree oil to help reduce Demodex mite populations.
  • Coconut oil to soothe inflammation and nourish the skin.
  • Gentle surfactants to clean away debris, oil, and bacteria.

Used daily, Blephadex wipes are an effective way to maintain eyelid hygiene and prevent symptoms from returning. We’ll show you exactly how to use them during your appointment, and you can pick up a pack directly from our Andrew Mizzi Optometrist practice.
